life on the estate

The Lake District is a stunning place to visit any time of the year and is lucky enough to be gorgeous even in the (sometimes perpetual) rain. Our beautiful corner of the Lake District is home to a host of wildlife and has a character all of it’s own. This Journal tells of moments in time upon the Estate and will give you a seasonal view of the place we wish to share with you.

Ready To Get Back To Normal

April 5th, 2021

The repairs are all finished now, scaffolding just about to be removed. Old houses are lovely but they never seem to be finished, there’s always a little something else that needs fixing. However Home Farm was built in the nineteenth century and its still standing so I’m sure it will be there long after I’m… Read more »

Spring Clean

March 15th, 2021

Opening Up We are looking forward to 12 April and opening up again. It’s a trite remark that we hope nothing happens to put off this long awaited release from lockdown. Plus we have to remember there are lots of businesses that cannot re-open until later in the year. We have taken the opportunity to… Read more »

New Year

Looking Forward It’s been quite a year. 2020 will be remembered as a year like no other and unfortunately 2921 has not started any better. Mother Nature never fails to impress me. This last week I have been reminded of summer with some beautiful roses at Lacet Cottage.   Then of course a storm arrived on Saturday and it rained and rained and then it rained some more. Better Times Ahead In March I reflected on the start of Spring, finally… I seem to be obsessed with the weather, but there has been good reason for that over the past six months or so. I have been trying to remember what the sun looks like and how lovely it is to have the… Read more »

Mercurial Weather

February 25th, 2020

Someone said this to me yesterday and I thought it was the most apt way to describe the last month of weather- mercurial. Mother Nature has thrown everything at us. Hail and sleet followed by snow and sunshine and more rain than I have ever seen. There is no point looking at the weather forecast… Read more »

Who Says Romance Is Dead?

December 24th, 2019

A Moonlit Walk Well doesn’t that sounds lovely. Getting out in to the wonderful outdoors with the company of a loved one and the moon to guide your way. Romance still survives, except of course in real life the moon lit walk is at 7.30am and my loved one is my faithful hound Shadow. The… Read more »

Autumn

October 30th, 2019

Leaves and Time Autmn has arrived again, The leaves are fading from green to every shade of rust, copper and gold. And now as the frosts begin to descend in the mornings the leaves are all forced from the trees and there is a melee of crispy, crunchiness underfoot. It’s a wonderful sound. Time has… Read more »

It’s Raining Again

September 27th, 2019

Autumnal Thoughts After a wonderful spring and Easter, certainly weather wise, you might have been forgiven for thinking a wonderfully warm summer was on the way. Alas it was not to be. In vivid contrast to last year’s drought we have had a very wet August. someone asked me was I surprised truly I have… Read more »
