life on the estate

The Lake District is a stunning place to visit any time of the year and is lucky enough to be gorgeous even in the (sometimes perpetual) rain. Our beautiful corner of the Lake District is home to a host of wildlife and has a character all of it’s own. This Journal tells of moments in time upon the Estate and will give you a seasonal view of the place we wish to share with you.

Plans Are Afoot

November 25th, 2021

Plans never go according to plan. If we’d got planning permission in good time the cabins would already be up and running. However things are now in place so that we can start on the groundworks soon, Here is the site plan: You should never count your chickens, but hopefully they will be ready May/June… Read more »

Highgate Pods

October 14th, 2021

Opening Next Year! We finally got planning permission for some cabins at Highgate. It wasn’t easy, but I don’t thing planning ever is. We are very excited to see it all being built, although the site looks a bit untidy at the moment. Next year there will be four cabins, two with outside baths and… Read more »

Hot Dogs

September 14th, 2021

Summer is gone It has been a good summer, for the visitors at least plenty of sunshine and dry weather, with little rain. Dacre beck was very low for a time and the grass was looking a little parched. But it’s time for a proper deluge and no doubt that will come in the Autumn.… Read more »

Gardening

June 9th, 2021

Always something to be done. You’ve never finished in the garden. We try to have a balance between some more formal areas and then some places where we let nature have more of a free hand. The lilac is at the edge of a bit of more unruly “garden”. Not really garden as we let… Read more »

Spring or Winter?

May 5th, 2021

What a beautiful month April was. With the changing weather patterns I think April is often one of the best times of year to visit the Lakes. A dry and sunny start to Spring. People were a little giddy I though venturing out in shorts and stripping off to bare chests, but I was willing… Read more »

Ready To Get Back To Normal

April 5th, 2021

The repairs are all finished now, scaffolding just about to be removed. Old houses are lovely but they never seem to be finished, there’s always a little something else that needs fixing. However Home Farm was built in the nineteenth century and its still standing so I’m sure it will be there long after I’m… Read more »

Spring Clean

March 15th, 2021

Opening Up We are looking forward to 12 April and opening up again. It’s a trite remark that we hope nothing happens to put off this long awaited release from lockdown. Plus we have to remember there are lots of businesses that cannot re-open until later in the year. We have taken the opportunity to… Read more »

New Year

February 3rd, 2021

Looking Forward It’s been quite a year. 2020 will be remembered as a year like no other and unfortunately 2921 has not started any better. But there is definitely much to be positive about as the vaccine programmer rolls out and we should start coming out of lockdown in the not too distant. This Winter… Read more »

Seasonal Cycle

October 5th, 2020

Mother Nature never fails to impress me. This last week I have been reminded of summer with some beautiful roses at Lacet Cottage.   Then of course a storm arrived on Saturday and it rained and rained and then it rained some more. Chris has spent the last threeweeks or so fixing drains on the… Read more »

A Summer Of Sorts

July 7th, 2020

Better Times Ahead In March I reflected on the start of Spring, finally… I seem to be obsessed with the weather, but there has been good reason for that over the past six months or so. I have been trying to remember what the sun looks like and how lovely it is to have the… Read more »
