Summer has Come Early In the Lake District

We were lucky enough to visit Porto this month and what a beautiful place it is. In fact in many ways it reminded me of home – very hilly and it rained- a lot! The weather was better here in the Lake District than the north of Portugal and I never thought I would say that. I hadn’t packed for rain so we had to buy some very fetching shapeless, plastic, transparent macs to keep us dry. I have no pictures of our sartorial elegance and I had to leave them in the hotel as I hadn’t the weight room in my suitcase. Or at least that is the story I will stick too if anyone asks. N0-one, not even Sophoan Loren could look good wearing one of those pacamacs. Still they served a purpose.

My real point here is that this month we have been truly blessed with some fabulous weather. Sunshine was in abundance and although the rain serves a purpose here to fill the lakes, we all smile a little broader when the sun shines. May is the last month of Spring although this yer it feels more like Summer. After some horrible weather over the last year I think we deserve some settled weather. It has allowed the wildlife to catch up with the growing season, the leaves and flowers are all in full bloom and the birds are busy feeding their young. Hopefully the late start to Spring won’t cause any lasting damage. Now as May moves seemlesslyy in to June and Summer proper begins, we can but hope that we are not about to wave goodbye to the good weather for the rest of the year.
