With crisp air, snow-dusted fells, and frost glistening across open fields, the Lake District transforms into a winter wonderland, and there’s no better way to experience it than on foot. From gentle wanders by frozen waterfalls to exhilarating climbs rewarded with panoramic views, winter walking in the northern Lakes is both peaceful and invigorating.
Whether you’re seeking a quiet stroll wrapped in winter stillness or a challenging snow-capped summit, here are some of our favourite winter walks to enjoy during your stay at Hutton John Estate.
Skiddaw – A winter peak adventure
Standing proud above Keswick, Skiddaw is one of the Lake District’s most majestic peaks and a true winter challenge. On a clear day, the snow-covered slopes glisten against a brilliant blue sky, offering unbeatable views across Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite.
The main route from Keswick via Carl Side and Ullock Pike is a rewarding climb of around 10 miles (16 km) and can take between 5–6 hours depending on the conditions. In winter, expect icy sections and occasional snow underfoot, so good boots and warm layers are essential.
For experienced walkers, it’s a truly breathtaking day out and one that captures the wild, rugged spirit of the Lake District in its purest form.
Along the way, enjoy the opportunity to take a scenic Ullswater Steamer cruise to rest and admire the majestic fells. The route includes stunning spots such as Aira Force, Howtown, and Pooley Bridge, making it an ideal route for walkers of all levels. Whether you choose to complete the full 20-mile route or walk in shorter sections, the Ullswater Way is a must for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Helvellyn – Striding edge in the snow
Helvellyn is a classic Lake District climb at any time of year, but in winter, it takes on an almost alpine feel. Rising to 950 metres, this is the third-highest peak in England, and the route via Striding Edge and Swirral Edge is nothing short of iconic.
Starting in Glenridding, this 8-mile (13 km) loop is one for confident, well-equipped walkers. The narrow ridges are often dusted with snow and ice in winter, creating dramatic photo opportunities and a true sense of adventure.
On the summit, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views across Ullswater and the snow-covered fells beyond. For the truly adventurous, the nearby Lake District Ski Club sometimes operates when conditions allow, offering a unique chance to ski or snowboard on Raise, just below Helvellyn’s eastern slopes.
Aira Force & Gowbarrow Fell
A winter walk at Aira Force is nothing short of magical. The famous waterfall thunders down between moss-covered rocks, often framed by icicles in colder months. From here, follow the circular Gowbarrow Fell trail for sweeping views of Ullswater and the surrounding snow-tipped peaks.
This moderate 4.5-mile (7 km) walk combines the best of the Lake District in one outing including enchanting woodland, a dramatic waterfall, and panoramic fell views. It’s also a wonderful family-friendly option, with paths well-marked and plenty of scenic spots to pause for a winter picnic or flask of hot chocolate.
Hallin Fell – Small summit, big views
For a shorter but equally rewarding adventure, Hallin Fell is a perfect choice. Rising above the southern tip of Ullswater, it’s a short, steep climb that’s ideal for families or anyone seeking a gentle winter hike with outstanding views.
From the summit, you can see the lake stretching northwards, framed by the snow-covered peaks of the Helvellyn range. The walk takes around an hour round-trip, leaving you plenty of time to explore the area or warm up with lunch at a nearby pub.
It’s the perfect “mini-mountain” to conquer on a crisp winter morning.
Blencathra – A classic winter fell
Visible from several of our properties, Blencathra is a striking sight in winter with its ridges and gullies often painted white with snow. While the Sharp Edge route is famous for its drama, it’s best avoided in icy conditions unless you’re very experienced.
Instead, take the easier and safer route via Blease Fell, which offers stunning views of the Eden Valley and Hutton John Estate below. This moderate 6-mile (10 km) walk is an excellent winter adventure that rewards you with a true mountain experience without the exposure of Sharp Edge.
Warm up after your walk
After a day exploring the fells, there’s no better way to unwind than returning to your cosy cabin at Hutton John Estate. Sink into your wood-fired hot tub, curl up by the fire, and watch the winter light fade across the hills — the perfect end to a day of adventure.
You’ll find recommendations for local cafés and pubs in each of our properties and in our digital guide, where you can refuel after your walk.
Plan your winter escape
From snowy summits to serene lakeside trails, winter walking in the Lake District offers a rare kind of magic. So lace up your boots, pack your thermos, and set out to discover the beauty of the northern Lakes this winter.
