Our green ethos

We are situated in the northern Lake District, an UNESCO World Heritage Site and protecting this beautiful corner of Cumbria is our highest priority.

SUSTAINABILITY PROMISE

We are committed to ensuring that all of our practices and suppliers are sustainable and that we are conserving the Estate so that it can be enjoyed for many more years to come. Here you can find out about just some of what we’re doing to keep our sustainability promise.

In our cottages

All of our cottages are fully insulated to UK housing regulations to make sure they are toasty warm and keep heating usage to a minimum.

Each window is either double-glazed or has secondary glazing to keep drafts out and heat in!

All of our electrical appliances have been upgraded to more efficient models.

All the lights are LED to make sure we are operating as efficiently as possible.

All of your waste is recycled by our waste disposal company so you don’t have to worry about it during your stay and we provide eco-friendly soap for handwashing.

In our cabins

Our cabins have been custom-built with sustainability in mind. Clad in locally sourced larch, they will blend seamlessly into their woodland environment over time.

All of the electricity in the cabins is run solely on solar panels with LPG used to run the hot water only that is sourced from a local borehole.

The cabins themselves are insulated to UK housing standards with an EPC ‘A’ rating and underfloor heating to make sure that the need for heating is kept to a minimum and they are toasty warm all year round.

The hot tubs are wood-fired and we will supply enough locally sourced, sustainable wood for your first soak.

The Bath House toiletries supplied in our cabins are made locally with 100% natural ingredients so not only are they kind to your skin, but they are completely environmentally friendly too.

The heritage wood surrounding our cabins, Brow Wood, has been carefully rewilded to create a nature-rich habitat.

All of your waste is recycled by our waste disposal company so you don’t have to worry about it during your stay and our car park lighting is kept on a sensor setting to minimise light disruption and any disturbances to the local wildlife.

Our suppliers

We are committed to supporting the local economy and ensuring that everyone we work with is as local as possible from the building contractors we use to the catering and linen supply companies to the products we stock in our welcome hampers.

We also offer you the opportunity to purchase your own bespoke hamper through local company, A Day’s Walk. These can be ordered online a week before your arrival.

Our Estate

Preserving our Estate so that it can be enjoyed for generations to come and creating a wildlife haven are at the core of everything we do.

We have spent many years planting trees and managing our woodlands to create a rewilded corner of Cumbria and have also started to plant willow as fuel for a local biomass boiler.

The dry stone walls across our Estate are continually restored to protect the wildlife that lives in them and our bat habitats are always protected so that any disruption is minimised.

The farmland throughout our Estate is carefully managed by local farmers who are committed to using low-input methods with minimal impact on the local wildlife and ecology.

Our preservation never stops; we continuously plant more trees, create hedges, and look for new ways to protect our nature-rich habitat.
